December 14, 2005

President Randy Burdette presided and welcomed guests: Donald Duckworth, guest of PDG Sandy Duckworth and visiting Rotarians.

Shirley Heim talked about the Christmas gifts for nursing home residents without families. There are thirty-three residents who will be getting Christmas stockings from Stafford Rotary. We have collected over 300 books for the Book Buddies program. 88 Christmas stockings, hats and scarves are on the way to St. Petersburg Orphanage.

The district has requested nominations for district governor for the year 2008-09. The club nominated AG Carol Foley.

Program

The speaker was Barney Reilly, executive director of the Rappahannock Area YMCA, and Elizabeth Clark spoke to us about the plans for expansion of the programs of the Area YMCA. A new Y will open in North Stafford in 2006. It will have an Olympic size swimming pool. This new facility will soon be followed by a new YMCA in King George County and one in Carline County. Elizabeth Clark will be the director of the new Y in North Stafford. She thanked us all for the help Rotary gave to build the facility in Spotsylvania County. During the question and answer session Barney said that the YMCA is expanding its outreach to troubled youth and have new programs for outreach to the Hispanic community.

Shirley Heim was happy that the Y had given an adult membership for the Rotary tree and a family membership for the Rotaract tree. She especially appreciates the YMCA because they had the exercise machine she needed when her shoulder was broken. Shirley joked about her health problems keeping her from ironing and vacuuming. She announced that the kids at Gayle Middle School are making hats and scarves for the senior citizens. The new Interact Club at River Bend High School will be sponsored by both the Rappahannock and the Fredericksburg Rotary Clubs. Shirley reminded us to start looking for airplane ornaments for next year’s Festival tree.

President Randy thanked Barney and Elizabeth for the program. He was happy to announce that his dad’s surgery went well, and his post operative tests were good.

Rotary Float in the Rose Parade

The Rotary International float in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade is undoubtedly the largest public relations project of the Rotary clubs of the United States and Canada. Since 1924 a Rotary float has been entered 18 times including every year since 1981. The famous Pasadena, California, parade is seen by an estimated 125 million people via worldwide television.

Funds for the construction of the Rotary parade entry are voluntarily given by Rotarians and clubs in the U.S. and Canada. The cost of designing, constructing and flower covering a Rose Parade float begins at about $120,000.

A multi-district Rotary committee in Southern California coordinates planning of the Rotary float and provides hundreds of volunteer hours of service. The Rotary float must portray the annual parade theme, usually depicting one of the worldwide service programs of Rotary International.

Each New Year's Day, Rotarians take pride in seeing their attractive float and realize they have shared in its construction by contributing a dollar or two to this beautiful public relations project. Be sure to watch the Rose Parade on new Year’s Day to see the Rotary International float.

The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. Team members experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop professional relationships, and exchange ideas. Team members stay with Rotarian host families during their stay, through which they develop lasting personal friendships and observe the international host country’s culture on a personal level.

Selecting a President

Each year, a distinguished Rotarian is selected as the worldwide president of Rotary International. The process begins one year in advance when a 17-person nominating committee is elected from separate zones of the world. To qualify for the nominating committee, a Rotarian must have served on the RI Board of Directors. If there is no past director able to serve from the zone, a past trustee of The Rotary Foundation or a past governor who has served on an RI committee may be appointed to the nominating committee.

The nominating committee may consider all former RI directors for the presidential candidate. Members of the nominating committee and current directors are not eligible. Any Rotary club may suggest the name of a former RI director to the committee for consideration.

The committee convenes in September to select the Rotarian to be the presidential nominee, whose name is announced to all clubs. Any Rotary club may make an additional nomination before 1 December, which must then be endorsed by one percent of all the Rotary clubs of the world (about 300). If such an event occurs, an election is held by mail ballot. If no additional nomination is presented by the clubs, the person selected by the nominating committee is declared to be the president-nominee. From that point on, that special Rotarian and spouse will spend more than a year in preparation and then a year serving the Rotarians of the world as the international president.

The President Elect of Rotary International for 2006-07 is William B. Boyd of New Zealand.

Meeting of the Rotary Club of Stafford
November 30, 2005

President Randy Burdette presided and welcomed guests: Former Rotarian Richard Lyall, Buddy Schofield, guest of Shirley Heim; Buzz Belcher, guest of Kathy Belcher; Julie the party planner, guest of Mark Smith; former Rotarian Mark Osborn. Visiting Rotarians were Jim Herrera, John Atkins, and Park Pierson from the Rappahannock Rotary.

Quiz:
Kathy Belcher had the answer. You can help the Rotary Foundation by shopping through CareClicks.com.

Announcements:
Shirley Heim announced that our tree “The Doctors Are In” sold for $1,200. The Rotaract Tree sold for $1,100. Shirley has picked next year’s theme for our tree. “Come Fly with Me”. She said the Book Buddies project needed 55 more children’s books. She received money enough for that goal by the end of the meeting.

Richard Lyall presented a book of table graces that his late father-in-law had collected. Your bulletin editor will endeavor to put some of them in the bulletin each week.

Jim Herrera gave a presentation about an international project the Rappahannock Rotary has undertaken. It is to supply a medical vehicle for a neighborhood in Quito, Ecuador. The Rotary Club in Quito is working with them on this project. They would like Stafford and Fredericksburg Rotary Clubs to join them. Jim is now serving as the District Youth Exchange Chairman.

Carol Foley reminded us to invite former Stafford Rotarians to our Christmas party. We want these people to return to us as soon as their schedules allow.

Mark Smith reminded everyone of the Christmas party December 9 at 6 pm at Colonial Circuits.

Brenda Gibbs announced the families who will be receiving Christmas gifts. She encouraged everyone to take at least two children. We will deliver gifts on December 17.

Carol Foley made an appeal for a bike for Alfred Moon, an employee at Loews who is a refugee from the Sudan. His bike was his only means of transportation, and it was stolen. Mary Rose pledged a bike for Mr. Moon.

Induction of New Member
We happily inducted Joe Howard, the new Stafford County Attorney, into the club. Joe was sponsored by T. Campbell. He’s a former Kiwanian, so he’s already been teased about moving up to a classier organization. Welcome to Rotary, Joe!

Program
The program was a very entertaining classification talk by Chris Franklin. What a great way to get to know your fellow club members! Chris was born in Newburg, New York, but grew in Kansas on a cattle ranch. He decided at a young age that he did not want to work with cattle all of his life, and he wanted to live in a city. He attended the University of Buffalo and the University of Richmond Law School. He worked for the Fredericksburg Public defenders Office while he was in law school. He prefers working in civil law. He joined a Fredericksburg law firm, Parrish, Houck and Franklin, after graduating from law school. He is married and has a brand new baby boy.

Scarf and Mitten Show
Students at Gayle Middle School sewed the mittens and scarves for the children at Orphanage #46 in St. Petersburg. Joan’s company ERI donated the polar fleece for the project. The students modeled some of the eighty-five hats and scarves they made. The faculty at Gayle integrated this project into the curriculum. Shirley announced that the Christmas stockings with toys have been purchased, and gift, scarves and hats will get to Russia in time for Christmas.

Happy Cup
Mary Rose had 17 people for dinner on Thanksgiving. Everyone was wonderful.

Aric Wagner helped John Atkins sell tickets to the Rappahannock Rotary annual pancake breakfast. He and Carlos attended the Rotary Leadership Institute. He told about Carlos being the only one in the class who assisted a fellow Rotarian who was blind.

Richard Lyall was happy he was able to visit us. His business continues to keep him busy all the time.

Eric Widener went to Abingdon to see his family, and he’s going to go to Disney World.

Shirley Heim announced that we had reached our Book Buddies goal. Last Monday she arranged for patients from Outlook Point to attend the Festival of Trees. They really enjoyed it.

Kathy Belcher was happy to have her husband visit.

Brenda Gibbs is going to see her daughter in Arizona after Christmas. Her son-in-law got another promotion. Yeah, GEICO!

Sandy Pratt had a great Thanksgiving and enjoyed the Festival of Trees. On a sad note she told she had to put her dog to sleep this weekend.

Carols said the fruit sales were great this year.
Sue Gibbs announced that the Hilton Garden Hotel is finally open.

Mark Smith thanked Julie for her help in planning our Christmas party.

PDG Graham announced that the Green Family Band will once again be playing at the lighting of the National Christmas Tree.

Mark Osborn said he was always happy to visit the best club in the district.

Nelda Mohr reminded everyone that Katie is conducting Handel’s Messiah on December 3 and 4.

Nicolette Ward is going back to Jamaica this Christmas.

Joe Howard said he was very happy to have joined this club.

The meeting concluded with the Four Way Test.

This week, of course, he and Susie are on their annual ski trip to Colorado. Al emailed me with the news that he reads our club blog and keeps up with our activities. His new Rotary club in California is certainly lucky to have him.
